Human-AI synergies: a new concept for the (inevitable) consulting of tomorrow [Series - Part I]
How consulting will inevitably change with the rise of the AI era.
I’ve been mulling over a weird idea lately.
You’ve likely heard the dire warnings about AI – job losses, industry upheaval, widespread unemployment.
Let’s not get carried away.
As management consultants, often seen as the epitome of white-collar professions, we would hardly be immune if these gloomy forecasts came true.
No worries, I don’t foresee such a dramatic outcome.
AI, particularly the latest advancements in Generative AI, is not destined to bring about an apocalyptic scenario. White-collar jobs, including management consultants, will persist.
However, it is reasonable to expect that our industry is bound to undergo significant transformation.
The timeline for this change is uncertain, but one thing is clear.
As technology evolves, change accelerates.
We need to be prepared, because it might come at us quick.
So… what exactly is this idea I have been contemplating?
In an era where AI is revolutionizing various sectors, management consulting is, too, poised for a major transformation.
Consultants will not be replaced by AI, though. Instead, they will be empowered by it, wielding AI tools and techniques to augment their human expertise.
Consultants will become Roboconsultants.
This idea of roboconsulting grew in me as a gradual realization of the potential that Artificial Intelligence holds for the consulting world. It certainly wasn’t an overnight epiphany, but a series of observations and experiences that slowly painted a picture of an inevitable future in my mind.
I have been witnessing the burgeoning capabilities of AI – from data analytics to predictive modeling – for years (in fact, I studied Artificial Intelligence at University, more than 20 years ago), and I can still see the growing demand for more efficient, data-driven consulting services.
I have realized that the future of consulting lays in harmoniously blending AI with human knowledge.
The concepts of roboconsulting and the roboconsultant emerge from the very real, and quickly moving, landscape where AI is increasingly influencing the consulting industry today.
We are at a pivotal moment.
Integrating AI into consulting is not just an option anymore, but a necessity to stay competitive and relevant in an arena marked by:
an increasing demand for data-driven decision-making,
the need for speed and efficiency in solving complex business challenges,
the desire for innovative approaches to traditional problems,
operating margins and rates pressures.
The urgency for consultants to adapt to this new era cannot be overstated.
While traditional skills remain invaluable, they need to be augmented with AI and technological expertise.
The consulting role is evolving, and it is on us to understand how these changes affect both our work processes and the outcomes we deliver to clients.

This AI-driven era has given rise to digital transformation consulting, where firms guide clients in incorporating digital technologies into all aspects of their business operations, fundamentally altering how they create value and remain competitive.
The roboconsultant: beyond traditional consulting
In our exploration of roboconsulting, it’s essential to further define the central figure in this upcoming era: the roboconsultant.
When I came up with the idea of the roboconsultant, I had in mind the human consultant of the future, one whose capabilities are augmented and elevated by cutting-edge AI tools and technologies.
As I mentioned earlier, at its core, the roboconsultant is still a human professional with deep domain knowledge, critical thinking skills, and the ability to understand complex business challenges.
However, what sets the roboconsultant apart is the seamless integration of AI-driven capabilities into their consulting repertoire.
The roboconsultant is no longer bound by the limitations of traditional consulting methods.
They have the power to process and analyze vast amounts of data rapidly, identifying trends, patterns, and insights that might elude human analysis. This ability to harness data as a strategic asset empowers the roboconsultant to make informed decisions, drive innovation, and offer more precise guidance to clients.
The Human-AI synergy in consulting

We don’t have them now.

We must distinguish the roboconsultant from traditional current consulting roles.
The traditional consultant relies primarily on their own expertise, experience, and human intuition. While invaluable, these traits have limitations when dealing with the complexity and scale of modern business challenges.
Sure, you can give the traditional consultant a couple of AI tools to use. But to what outcome?
The distinction between a traditional consultant simply equipped with AI tools and a roboconsultant lies in more than just the possession of advanced technology.
There is a fundamental shift in mindset, skillset, and the way consulting services are conceptualized and delivered.
Consulting firms need to change to allow the roboconsultants to thrive.
New consulting firms will be born that are AI-native.

Imagine two characters: Alice, a seasoned traditional consultant, and Bob, a cutting-edge roboconsultant.
Both are highly skilled, but their approaches to solving business problems are fundamentally different.

Complementary strengths
First, there are the AI systems.
These, with their massive ability to process vast quantities of data, identify patterns, and perform complex computations, bring a level of analytical precision that was previously unattainable.
AI systems excel in tasks that involve number crunching, statistical analysis, and predictive modeling, making them indispensable for data-driven aspects of consulting.
For instance, in market analysis, AI can effortlessly sift through large datasets to uncover emerging trends or in risk assessment, where it can predict potential pitfalls based on historical data patterns.
Then, there are the people.
Human consultants bring to the table their innate abilities that AI currently cannot replicate: emotional intelligence, ethical reasoning, and creative thought processes.

Furthermore, the workflow is iterative.
Consultants can feed their observations and strategic inputs back into the AI system, refining the analysis.
For instance, if a consultant identifies a potential market opportunity that the AI did not highlight, this information can be used to adjust the AI’s parameters or training data, enhancing its future analyses. This iterative process ensures a continuous enhancement of both AI capabilities and the consultant’s strategies, leading to a more effective and nuanced consulting service.
This interactive workflow creates a dynamic where AI and human intelligence are more than simply co-existing.
