I feel this goes beyond wokeism or anything like that.

In fact, the first time I had this type of conversation was exactly 15 years ago when my boss at the time told me how she felt it absolutely makes sense to have "favorites" in a team.

At the time, I was not entirely persuaded by the argument but as I matured as a professional I could see the rationale behind it. I now 100% agree with it.

Agreed.

Play the most capable / skilled on the team. Rather than giving the white guy a chance because he's an "endangered species".

That's what I meant by meritocratic.

When stakes are high, play the most skilled player so the others can see how it's done and perhaps earn their opportunity later on.
